The weather started to change from hot to colder and windier. That promised good for fishing. Friday day was a no go. It was so windy I could not hit the lake with my relatively small boat. The promised the same wind for all days.. mornings are typically calmer so i decided to wake up 6.00 on saturday morning and see how the weather is. It was fine so I quickly packed my stuff and ate breakfast.
I had only max 2 h to fish, because i had to drive my wife and baby to a local flea market at our cottage city center :D. So i decided to go to a small bay that was right under the wind and the surface was breaking nicely in front of the grass and water lilies. I decided to try Spinner baits since the water was starting to be quite warm. first 15 mins i scanned the grass with firetiger spinner bait. One "push" to the lure and nothing more. I changed the lure to red/black/silver and stayed at the spot i had the attack.
Quite soon i felt a powerful attack and the fish was on! It did a few strong dives before i managed to get it in the net. My net felt quite small compared to this pike and i had minor difficulties to fit it in on first try. Luckily it was securely hooked. BUT the leader lock took major damage and it was pure luck it held as I noticed when i got the fish on board! (see pic below). Note so self, replace the lock part frequent enough! That might have been the reason or just bad luck (in this case good).
Species & size: Pike, 6,2 kg & 101 cm
Time of day: around 7.30
Weather: Sunny, wind 4 m/s north, ca. + 13 C
Fishing style: Casting
Depth at catch site: ca. 1,5 m
Lure: Savage Gear - Da´Bush 42 g / RS Red Silver Flash (with a jig applied to the back hook)
On sunday morning I went again 6.30 to the lake only to almost relive the same thing.. I felt something right at the first spot i was fishing. A strange light sudden feeling when reeling. I was still a bit sleepy so it took me few seconds to realize that the spinner bait was attacked/pushed by a pike that was still there. I immediately made the yank to hook it properly and I thought i still managed to do so.. but next to the boat it got released. At least I saw it and it was most certainly a +5k pike! Well that was my own bad.. But at least few minutes after that i got a food pike for my parents, around 3 kg (max 4)
All in all a great total of few hours fishing. The second big pike would have crowned the trip but I cant say that im unhappy with these either :). After one week lets see if the bigger pikes are still in the shallows..
